John Plumb Age: 90
British historian and author who was an expert on 18th-century England. He was a prolific writer, publishing 23 books in 23 years. His most important works include England in the Eighteenth Century (1950), The First Four Georges (1956), and biographies of Sir Robert Walpole (repr. 1972) and the earl of Chatham (2d ed. 1965). He spent all of his academic career at Christ's College, Cambridge. Died: Cambridge, England, Oct. 21, 2001
