Dorothy Dunnett

Scottish novelist whose multi-layered historical novels explored the culture, art, and science of the Renaissance period. She's best known for the six-book series,The Lymond Chronicles, about a dashing 16th-century Scot, and the eight-book series The House of Niccolò, about a merchant.
