Mike Mansfield Age: 98
Democrat from Montana who served as Senate majority leader from 1961 to 1977, longer than any other politician. As majority leader, he helped to secure passage of major civil-rights legislation and progressive social programs. He was appointed ambassador to Japan after he left the Senate and served under both Democratic and Republican presidents until his retirement in 1989. Died: Washington, D.C., Oct. 5, 2001
