More than 5,000 people were reported missing in the tragedy and assumed dead. He denied involvement in the attack but through an aide called it “punishment from Allah.” President Bush declared war on terrorism and said he wanted bin Laden “dead or alive.” Bin Laden has been implicated in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1998 bombings at the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 200, and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen.
