playmaking guard who was the first NBA player to record 500 assists in a season (1952); five-time NBA All-Star in 11 pro seasons; helped Boston win first of 16 NBA championships in 1957; All-American at Illinois where he ran the show for the "Whiz Kids" teams that won Big Ten titles in 1941 and 1942; inducted to Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961. The cause of death was not given. Died: Rancho Mirage, Calif., April 28
