Age: 75

San Diego-area baseball reporter for almost 40 years; inducted into the writers wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990; started at the San Diego Union covering the Dodgers in 1958, adding the Angels in 1961 and the Padres from their inception in 1969; became a national baseball writer in the 1980s and wrote a weekly column after his retirement in 1996 through 1999; broke the story that Sandy Koufax was retiring in 1966. He died of cancer.
