Robert Tools

received the first self-contained artificial heart in July. The device, the AbioCor, was surgically implanted by doctors at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Tools was near death from end-stage heart failure when he underwent the procedure. Tools suffered a severe stroke in mid-November. He died in late November, five months after the received the artificial heart. Doctors said he died of complications from abdominal bleeding.
