Robert Mueller III, seasoned prosecutor, was tapped by President Bush to succeed Louis J. Freeh as the director of the FBI. Mueller served as U.S. attorney twice, in Boston from 1982 to 1988 and in San Francisco since 1998. He won easy Senate confirmation in August.
