Vladimiro Montesinos,

former spy chief of Peru, was captured in Venezuela in June after spending eight months in hiding. He was whisked to Peru, where he faces a laundry list of charges, including bribery, money laundering, arms trafficking, torture, and leading a paramilitary death squad. He fled the country in 2000, after the broadcast of a tape in which he was seen evidently attempting to buy the loyalty of an opposition congressman. The video ended the career of President Alberto Fujimori, who employed Montesinos as a presidential aide, spymaster, and attorney. Since Montesinos fled, thousands of tapes have surfaced that illustrate the corruption rampant during Fujimori's reign.
