John Phillips Age: 65
folk musician and songwriter whose band, the Mamas and the Papas, spoke to the '60s generation, with breezy songs that epitomized the laid-back, live-and-love attitude of southern California and the hippie lifestyle. The band's success was short-lived, as intraband romantic entanglements and drug use led to its demise. Their hits include “California Dreamin'” and “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair).” Died: Los Angeles, March 18, 2001
