Ariel Sharon,

right-wing Israeli politician, won a landslide victory over Ehud Barak in the February special prime minister elections. He won 62.6% of the vote to Barak's 37.2%. Sharon said he would work toward peace with the Palestinians only after he brings security to Israel and an end to the violence that has plagued the country since September 1999. He said he considers the Oslo agreement dead, and has vowed that he would not make as sweeping concessions as his predecessor, Barak, did.
