Leonard Woodcock

president of the United Auto Workers who led a 67-day strike against auto giant General Motors in 1970, which resulted in higher wages and pensions. As President Carter's envoy to China, he negotiated with Chinese officials to reestablish diplomatic ties with the U.S.
