Hall of Fame golfer who won the first Vardon Trophy for the lowest average score and won 32 career PGA Tour titles; arguably the best golfer never to win a major; came close to winning a major several times, including second-place finishes at 1936 Masters and 1927 U.S. Open; nicknamed "Lighthorse" for the speed of his play; longest-serving member of the PGA of America (since 1923); teaching pro at New York's Metropolis CC for 26 years and Westchester CC until he was 93; cause of death not given
