Vojislav Kostunica,

Serbian lawyer and opposition politician, was sworn in as president of Serbia in Oct., after soundly defeating President Slobodan Milosevic in Sept. elections. Milosevic initially refused to concede defeat, but stepped down after several hundred thousand Serbs took to the streets in nonviolent protest to demand the end of his 13 years of rule. Kostunica faces the task of organizing a broad, 18-party opposition. He said he would not turn Milosevic over to the Hague to stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity.
