Cathy Freeman,

Aborigine sprinter, used her gold medal in the 400 meters to bring international attention to the plight of Aborigines, the original inhabitants of Australia who have historically been victims of exploitation and discrimination. She also lit the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony.
