Jerry Claiborne Age: 72
college football coach at Virginia Tech, Maryland and Kentucky who took 11 teams to postseason bowl games; played for Bear Bryant at Kentucky and coached nine seasons there (eight under Bryant); coached four Academic All-Americans and had 87 players make the SEC all-academic team; retired after the 1989 season with a record of 179-122-8 and was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000; He died of a heart attack. Died: Nashville, Ky., Sept. 24
