adoption advocate whose efforts to adopt abandoned Korean-American war orphans led to the 1955 Bill for Relief of Certain War Orphans, which allowed American families to adopt several foreign-born children. She and her husband adopted eight Korean babies and established Holt International Children's Services, a highly regarded adoption agency. Died: Creswell, Ore., July 24, 2000
