Francis Collins and J. Craig Venter, scientists, announced in June that their rival groups had each completed a rough map of the human genome—the chemical sequences for human DNA. Collins heads the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health. Venter is CEO of Celera Genomics, a for-profit U.S. company. The biological implications of this achievement are vast, giving doctors the potential to treat and cure diseases that are now incurable.
