prolific composer who wrote nearly 500 orchestral, choral, and chamber works. His influences ranged from the eruption of Mount St. Helens to Asian harmonies to sacred Hindu texts. He also wrote ballets for Martha Graham and Erick Hawkes. Died: Seattle, June 21, 2000
