Foday Sankoh, Sierra Leone rebel leader, was captured by pro-government soldiers in May, days after his Revolutionary United Front kidnapped more than 500 U.N. peacekeepers. Sankoh's forces ravaged Sierra Leone for more than a decade, hacking off the limbs of civilians who resisted his leadership and his claim on the country's diamond mines, the proceeds from which financed the war.
