Ken Livingstone,

leftist politician, became London's first elected mayor in May. Known as “Red Ken” for his left-wing views, Livingstone, who ran as an independent, prevailed despite the Labor Party and Prime Minister Tony Blair's campaign against him. Livingstone led London's previous governing body, the Greater London Council, which was abolished in 1986.
