Yoshiro Mori, Japanese politician, was elected prime minister by Parliament in April, succeeding Keizo Obuchi, who died in May after a debilitating stroke. A 30-year member of Parliament, Mori had most recently been the Liberal Democrats' secretary general, the party's second-highest-ranking official.
