Abram Chayes Age: 77
expert in international law who served as an influential legal adviser in the Kennedy administration. He established the legal ground for the Navy's quarantine of Soviet ships that were headed toward Cuba during 1962's Cuban missile crisis. He died of pancreatic cancer. Died: Boston, April 16, 2000
