Joe Mullaney Age: 75
former L.A. Lakers and Providence College basketball coach; coached Lakers for two seasons beginning in 1969 and coached the Friars from 1955-69 and 1981-85; led Providence to two NIT championships (1961,63); also coached Norwich University in Vermont, Brown University and several ABA teams; coached former Georgetown coach John Thompson at Providence; won national championship as a player with Holy Cross in 1947, and played briefly for the Boston Celtics. He died of cancer. Died: North Providence, R.I., Mar. 8
