Rams, San Diego Chargers; joined Bill Walsh's 49ers' staff in 1979; tough character known for using his military training with players; coached nine Pro Bowl linemen, including Randy Cross and Guy McIntyre; diagnosed with bile duct cancer in January 1999; honored during halftime tribute on Oct. 3, 1999; He died of cancer.
