Edward Knipling Age: 90U.S. government entomologist who devised a technique to sterilize male screwworms, essentially eradicating the insect and saving livestock from a fatal plague. Knipling sterilized the flies with an X-ray machine. The method, which doesn't require the use of pesticides, has been used to control other insect populations.
