British novelist widely considered one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century. His early prewar work satirized the aristocracy, and his postwar novels, notably his 12-volume masterpiece, A Dance to the Music of Time, chronicled it. In the series, which he worked on from 1951 to 1975, Powell focused mostly on three aristocrats, beginning with their adolescence at the beginning of World War I through old age in the early 1970s.Died: Frome, England, March 28, 2000
