exiled Chinese cardinal who spent 30 years in prison for refusing Communist China's demand to renounce the Roman Catholic Church. While he was imprisoned, Pope John Paul II secretly appointed him cardinal. He traveled to the U.S. in 1998 for medical treatment and was not allowed to return to China.

Died: Stamford, Conn., March 12, 2000
