Vladimir V. Putin, Russian politician, was elected president of Russia in March, taking nearly 53% of the vote. Communist candidate Gennadi Zyuganov placed second, with 30%. Putin, a former member of the KGB, had been acting president since Dec. 31, 1999, when President Boris Yeltsin promptly resigned and named Putin as his successor.
