Clifton Daniel

Age: 87

managing editor of The New York Times from 1964 to 1969. As head of the news staff, he emphasized stylish feature articles and penetrating coverage of social life and trends. He also spearheaded the transformation of obituaries into lively biographies. He died of complications from a stroke and heart disease.
