George W. Bush,

governor of Texas, became the Republican nominee for president at the Aug. Republican National Convention. The path to nomination was not an easy one for Bush. Sen. John McCain's insurgent campaign took the governor by surprise, and forced him to move to the right in order to secure the vote of the religious right.
