Bettino Craxi

Age: 65

Italian Socialist politician who served as prime minister from 1983 to 1987. The country enjoyed unprecedented economic growth during his reign, and Craxi is credited with stemming inflation. It all came crashing down on him in the early 1990s, however, when corruption investigations revealed bribery, nepotism, and kickbacks in his administration and the party.

Died: Tunisia, Jan. 19, 2000
