John Lyday

Age: 78

surgeon who was the inspiration for the fictional character Trapper John in the film and television series M*A*S*H. He served as a combat surgeon in Korea and later as chief surgeon at Greensboro, N.C.'s Cone Hospital. Lyday died of cancer.

Died: Greensboro, N.C., December 20, 1999
