C. Vann Woodward, Age: 91Pulitzer Prize-winning storyteller and historian who chronicled the upheaval of the turbulent South, as well as its culture. In his books, Woodward, an expert on race relations, combined grace and fact, art and intellect. He's best known for 1955's The Strange Career of Jim Crow, a book Martin Luther King, Jr. called “the historical bible of the civil rights movement.” His other noteworthy books include Tom Watson: Agarian Rebel and Origins of the New South.
