Alexander Liberman

Age: 87

influential editor and artist, revolutionized fashion magazines by featuring bold, "real-life" fashion rather than pretense as editor of Vogue and editorial director of the entire Condé Nast empire, which in addition to Vogue includes GQ, Vanity Fair, Architectural Digest, Details, and other slick monthlies. He was a respected, though wildly extravagant Expressionist painter, and many critics failed to separate the artist from his professional career.

Died: Miami Beach, Fla., November 19, 1999
