John Chafee

Rhode Island Republican who was serving his fourth term in the U.S. Senate. At the time of his death, Chafee, considered one of the most liberal Republican senators, was chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Earlier in his career he had been elected governor of Rhode Island for three terms.
