Frank M. Johnson, Jr.

Age: 80

uncompromising federal judge from Alabama whose rulings helped desegregate many of Montgomery's public facilities and cleared the way for Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of supporters to march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. A Republican appointee, Johnson always insisted he was simply upholding “the supremacy of the law.”

Died: July 23, 1999
