handsome actor known for his barrel chest—and roles in epics like Samson and Delilah and The Robe. “Mr. Beautiful” got his big break in 1940, after a brief appearance in The Housekeeper's Daughter generated 20,000 fan letters. But he didn't take himself too seriously. “I'm no actor,” he told a country club that rejected him because of his profession. “And I have 70 movies to prove it.”
