Patrick J. Buchanan, 61, columnist, television commentator, and politician, bolted from the Republican Party to seek the presidential nomination as a Reform candidate. He was widely criticized for the controversial views he outlined in A Republic, Not an Empire. In it he said Nazi Germany posed “no physical threat to the United States after 1940.”
