Lamar Alexander, 59, former governor of Tennessee, dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination after a poor showing at August's Iowa straw poll. Alexander, a moderate Republican, had been running for more than six years, ever since he left his post as Secretary of Education in 1993, but had only raised about $2.5 million — not nearly enough to compete with Gov. George Bush's $37 million war chest.
