Johannes Rau,

68, German politician, was elected president of Germany in May. The post is mostly a ceremonial position, with the president's prime responsibility being to act as the country's moral conciliator during times of national strife. Rau, a moderate Social Democrat, is the former head of Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia.
