Bill Bradley, 56, former senator from New Jersey, was the only Democrat to challenge Al Gore, Jr., for the party's presidential nomination. Until the fall, Gore had all but ignored Bradley's campaign, but as Bradley gained public support and an endorsement by Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan of N.Y., Gore revamped his campaign.
