James Farmer

Age: 79

the last surviving member of the “Big Four” civil rights leaders of the 1960s, he helped found the Congress of Racial Equality in 1942. His contributions and his courage were honored in 1998 when President Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Died: Fredericksburg, Va., July 9, 1999
