Vere Bird

Age: 89

Antiguan who became powerful during the island's colonial period and went on to lead his country after it gained independence from Britain in 1981. The former prime minister, who was succeeded by his oldest son, Vere Bird, Jr., after retiring in 1994, began a political dynasty that was notoriously corrupt.
