Bob Backus

weight thrower who won seven consecutive American titles in the 56-pound event (1953-59), seven in eight years in the 35-pound event and one in the hammer throw during a decorated amateur career; won gold in the hammer throw at the 1955 Pan American games; finished 13th at 1952 Helsinki Olympics; at age 51 finished second in the 35-pound weight throw at the national indoor championships.
