J. F. Powers

(James Farl Powers)
Age: 81

acclaimed writer of short stories and novels who won the 1963 National Book Award for Morte d'Urban. The successful short story collection Prince of Darkness (1947) demonstrated his signature incorporation of American Catholicism into his writing.

Died: Collegeville, Minn., June 12, 1999
