Steve Chiasson

Age: 32

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman who spent eight years in Detroit beginning in 1986; traded to Calgary in 1994 and what was then the Hartford Whalers in 1997; played in the NHL All-Star Game in 1993; in 1989-90 scored a career-high 14 goals and led all Detroit defensemen in scoring with 42 points; notched his 300th career point on Nov. 29, 1995. Died in a one-car automobile crash after a season-ending playoff loss in Boston; his blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal state limit.

Died: Raleigh, N.C., May 3, 1999
