Charlie Whittingham Age: 86
three-time Eclipse Award winning trainer who at age 73 became the oldest to saddle a Kentucky Derby winner (Ferdinand 1986) and at 76 the oldest to saddle a Preakness winner (Sunday Silence 1989); prepared more than 2,500 winners during a career that spanned 62 years; more than 20 of the horses he trained topped $1 million in career earnings; held the national earnings title seven times (1970-73, 1975 and 1981-82); won Eclipse Awards as top trainer in 1971, 1982, 1989; inducted into horse racing's hall of fame in 1974. He died of leukemia. Died: Pasadena, Calif., April 20, 1999
