Arthur Schawlow Age: 77
Nobel-winning physicist who collaborated with Dr. Charles H. Townes in the development of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, now commonly known as “laser.” Though it is disputed who was the first to invent lasers, Schawlow's contributions as a pioneer in laser development were unquestionably significant. Died: Palo Alto, Calif., April 28, 1999
