Gene Benson

Age: 85

Negro Leagues outfielder of the 1940's who mentored a young Jackie Robinson before Robinson broke baseball's racial barrier; debuted with the Philadelphia Stars in 1937 but was traded to Pittsburgh the next season; returned to the Stars where he batted .327, .370, and .345 from 1944-46.

Died: Philadelphia, April 6, 1999
